At the Ed Adams Invitational at Hartnell College in Salinas on April 2, the Yuba team did fairly well. Long distance runner, Brian Nelson, captured second in the 800 meter race with a 1:59.34 time and took third in the 1500 meter (4:06.08).

The men’s 4-by-100 relay team of Julius Smith, Grant Joyner, Charles Johnson and “GP” took fifth in 44.65 seconds.

Marysville alumni, Rachel Merriam was fifth in the 500 meter with a 1:01.48 time. The women’s 4-by-100 relay team of Sarah States, Gavina Avila, Samara Jackson and Merriam was third with a 56.73 time.

In the field events, freshman States was fourth in the javelin with a distance of 97’4″ and Avila was seventh in the triple jump, going 30’2.5″.

On the 9th of April, the Yuba team traveled to a freezing cold Fresno on a dreary, windy cold day. Out of 24 teams, Nelson ran away with first place. Running the 800 meter in 1:56.40 time, Nelson left the other runners a good 75 meters behind.

The team of Grant Joyner, Charles Johnson, Kramer Winningham and Julius Smith took third in the 4-by-100 relay with a 43.85 time.

Smith was also seventh in the 100 meter.

For the 49er women, Merriam finished in fifth place in the 400 meter (1:03.56) and in the 800 meter (2:32.60).

Avila was seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 30’8.5″.

Coach Todd Anderson felt that the team did really well despite the cold.
