New library in 2013

February 8, 2012 Bobby Day 1 Comment

Renovation and remodeling has been long over-due at the library. Between the outdated interior design, the lack of study rooms, and its overall presence of obsolescence, one could easily mistake the old library for a mere storage room of books as opposed to what people have come to expect in a library. The new remodeling is being placed on a budget of around 12 million dollars, as a part of the funds provided by Measure J. The new design is a collective project being put together by “Measure J Building 1100 User Group.”

“Student feedback was a big part of what we put into the new library,” said Elena Heilman, the College’s Librarian. There will be 10 study rooms, each offering a private environment for groups to gather and study without the interruption. Along with a cafe and a grassy courtyard both offering wifi internet access, there will be a computer lab capable of fitting around 60 to 90 computers in it.

According to Heilman, the color pallet chosen for the new library will be something modern and long-lasting, much unlike the previous carpeting and color that was clearly straight out of the 1970’s, the last time it had been renovated.

The project started in 2006, and has been ongoing since the funding became available. The projected time period in which students and faculty can expect to start using the library again is Spring of 2013.

Yes, the renovation is much overdue. The library staff are very excited for students to finally get well deserved nice and comfortable study spaces. We just wish it could be done faster!
