Dena Martin is the new faculty librarian at Woodland Community College. Whether students have questions about research, or just general information, Dena Martin has the answers.
Martin can assist students with information regarding research, references, APA & MLA format, technology (such as ITV and Web CT), and supply in-depth knowledge regarding student services. Besides having a Masters of Library Information Science degree in Information Literacy, our new librarian has many years of library experience. She has worked at the Sacramento City College library and has recently transferred from a public library in the Bay Area. Her role as a librarian is to provide reference and instruction as well as to show students how to look up research. Effectively. Information literacy, the focus of her degree, is the practice of searching and finding information, evaluating it for its validity and purpose, and using it correctly. This is a skill that will not just help students succeed in college, but one that is also essential to becoming a life-long learner.
Our new librarian can help students take advantage of any of the new services offered in the Learning Resource Center. Once the LRC is completed, the library and technology services will be relocated to the new building. The spring 2007 semester will be the transition period from the old library building to the new LRC. It is the faculty and administration’s goal to make the transition as painless as possible for students. For students who plan on attending WCC next semester, our librarian will be able to provide information regarding the location of materials and technology during the moving phase. Also, the library’s technical assistant, Darlene Gray, will be able to provide guidance and answer question upon student’s request.
The LRC is scheduled to be fully functional by the summer session 2007. The new, 70,546 sq. ft Learning Resource Center will offer students a wide variety of resources, such as State-of-the-art classrooms, small study rooms for group work, a large conference room able to accommodate 300 people, a larger and improved computer lab, a tutoring center, and a separate library training room for Library and Reference workshops and instruction. The LRC Media Center will have a TV production studio and offer Web Design classes.
As the LRC nears completion, Martin will contribute to the acquisition of new Library resources. Now she needs information from students. What are student expectations of their new librarian? She would like to know if there any services that students could benefit from that are not offered on campus. Do You have any other questions/concerns? Dena Martin is available to answer questions or get student feedback in the library during business hours or via email (dmartin@yccd.edu). There are bulletins on the counter in the library that have important library information such as hours, library contact numbers and emails. You will find this information in a column on the left side of the bulletin.
