Does running two laps in 1:55 sound fast to you? It does to me. That is what Brian Nelson, a 2004 graduate from Sutter High School, ran at the Nor-Cal qualifying events last spring. Other than him, Gary Parks, a sophomore from Florida is the only returning track member from the 2005 track team. Nelson will be running the 400, 800 and the 1500 meter races and Parks will be darting in the 100 and 200 meter races. However, there are five new athletes anxious to show their talents off this year.
Coming from Florida is freshmen Derek Brown, who is also a gray shirt for the Yuba College’s basketball team, is strutting his stuff on the field in the triple jump and high jump events.
Although there are no statistics for him to show yet, the upcoming meet at Sacramento City College this Saturday, should be a time for him to shine.
Cody Savage, a freshmen from Sutter, plans on running the 200 and 400 meter races. When asked about his thoughts of the upcoming year, he remarked, “I have been running since sophomore year of high school and I did really well my senior year.
In high school, I ran the 400, but I am going to try the 200 meter this year. I’m optimistic about the season; I think that I will do good.”
Did you know that a decathlon consists of the 100 meter race, the 110 meter high hurdle race, the 400 and 1500 meter races, as well as throwing the javelin, discuss, shot put, high jump, long jump and the pole vault? That is a lot of events to do in one meet.
However, there is a new talent on the team that is willing to try them all. Corey Sherrin, a freshmen from Marysville, intends on accomplishing it all. Coach Ted Hoal commented that he was “looking forward to seeing Sherrin accomplish it all.”
A Lincoln native, Max DuBoise, is coming out this season with the hopes of competing in the shot put, discuss throw and the javelin events. Jasmine Wright, a Wheatland High School product, is coming out for the first time to the field. She plans on racing in the 100 meter hurdle race and in the long, high and triple jumps.
In her off-season, she is a 49er basketball player and Coach Hoal commented that she “is really fast in the hurdle race and should do very well this season.”
Overall, the team looks really good for the season. Although the team is quite smaller than what the coach would like, he noted, “we should be okay. There are some quality kids that should do well. We are a small team, but we are definently hard working. I think that we will compete really well within our conference.”
Sophomore Nelson agrees with him, “This year should be a good one. Hopefully, I can do better and make it to the Nor-Cal qualifying and do well in the races. I would like to get to the state level qualifying, but that would be hard because I’d have to run really, really fast. Not just fast, but really fast.” Well, it sounds to me that although he runs really fast, he still needs to drop the time, if he wants to go anywhere near state.
