Yuba College is seeing many changes. First the college gained a new President, Nicki Harrington, and now we are gaining a new Vice President of Instruction. At a Yuba College Summit meeting, attended by faculty, staff and students, Harrington introduced Dr. Alan Lowe as the new Vice President of Instruction. He will start in his new position June 17.
Dr. Lowe said he is looking forward to being a part of the Yuba College staff. He is a former psychologist and a counselor. At the summit, Harrington described Dr. Lowe as ” a good listener and a good thinker.” Originally from New York, Dr. Lowe earned his B.A. and M.A. in Psychology and his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Counseling, from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Dr. Lowe is no stranger to the Yuba College campus; he applied for the Vice President of Instruction position 17 years ago. He is also a longtime friend of Yuba College photography instructor Richard Murai. He said he is familiar with the Yuba College campus and faculty. “I really like being here. Everyone was very pleasant, and there seemed to be a nice warmth on the campus,” said Dr. Lowe The job of the Vice President of Instruction is to be a leader of the educational programs within the district. Also his duty is to improve the quality of the curriculum and make it more student centered. He is depended upon to provide leadership for faculty and students in their common mission to improve educational quality.
Dr. Lowe stated many times he would like to see a “fresh look” appear on campus. He would like to see the people of Yuba College become proud of their school and make the most out of their time spent here. He also would like to see more involvement with the students, faculty as well as administrators on campus. Dr. Lowe believes he is a team-oriented person and would love to receive input from everyone on campus. He said he is looking forward to working with all to make positive things happen. Before joining Yuba College, Dr. Lowe worked in the California Community College system as an administrator for both instruction and student services at Ohlone College in Fremont, and he was the Title III coordinator during his tenure at Mission College in Santa Clara. Currently he is finishing his seven-year position as the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Western Career College in Sacramento.
Dr. Lowe has been residing in California since 1964 and has been all over the state, but he said, “Somehow I knew while driving up to Tahoe, I would be living in the Sacramento area.” Dr. Lowe enjoys art, especially drawing and painting clowns, and he promises that they are happy clowns. He also considers himself a poet and an Oakland A’s fan. Dr. Lowe has four children from a blended family and lives with his wife and four furry animals: three dogs and a cat.
