Niners swing and miss

May 3, 2004 Staff Leave a Comment

The Yuba College baseball team completed its 2004 season Saturday, May 8, but the season for the 49ers ended many weeks before. The team continued to fight and play despite their record of 7-22 in the Bay Valley Conference (4-19 against conference teams).

“We play against some of the strongest competition with Northern California, and although we match up well against a majority of teams, games aren’t played on scouting reports,” Coach Tim Gloyd said. “We have to continue to play hard and put the win/loss record behind us.”

Despite their last place standing in the win/loss column, the 49ers lead the BVC in overall team hitting. Pitchers Anthony Naranjo and Charlie Madden have been able to keep teams at bay while the offensive output from behind the plate has been provided from catcher Darren DeWesse, outfielder Nick Hansen, catcher Bobby Davis and first baseman Nick Williams.

“We got hits and runs, but not as consistent as I had hoped,” Coach Gloyd remarked. “The beginning of the season was difficult due to bad weather and not being able to practice correctly, but we still played with fire and intensity.”

Coach Gloyd concluded, “We had a lot of injuries and rough spots, but I think our future is very bright.”
