Excitement and rock music filled the air Tuesday, March 3 on the Yuba College campus as the band Nu-Clear played for the students. The band set up outside near the theater, right in the middle of campus. The event was very picnic-like in that hot dogs and hamburger were being served, and the majority of the crowed was sitting in the grass, shading themselves from the sun.
As you looked around the campus during the noon hour, you could tell that the students and staff really enjoyed this type of entertainment. There were a lot of smiles, along with people dancing, and socializing.
“This rocks out! It sucks being in the cafeteria everyday. With something like this going on, I get an energy overload!” said a student who continued to show her appreciation for the band by jumping and dancing to their music.
Nu-Clear had the captive audience clapping their hands and singing along. The band’s set consisted of mostly harder songs but they did have a few softer, more touching songs to give their performance some variety. About thirty minutes into the set, the students started to approach the stage to dance and jump around. After the show was over, students quickly rushed to the bands merchandise table to purchase stickers, t-shirts and CD’s.
Nu-Clear hails from Sacramento, and was named best punk/rock band of Sacramento in 2003. They are nominated for the same award this year. The band has three releases under their belt and are in the process of recording their fourth
Many students have expressed theirs frustrations with the lack of student activities at Yuba College. “I want to see a lot more stuff like this on campus.” Said Spruce Phalon, a student who stood in the bands merchandise line after the performance. And from the looks of things, on campus activities seem to be heading in the right direction. When asked about similar events for next semester Andria Black, the ASYC president said, “As far as we know, we have plans in the making for such events for next semester.”
ASYC Activities Director Gavina Avila adds, “Next semester we’re going to start out fresh and not make it as boring as everyone says it is.” Avila also said she is going to brainstorm ideas and talk to people over the summer about extracurricular activities in the fall. Her goal is to provide the incoming freshmen, as well as returning students a fun experience at Yuba College.
