Nurses needed

May 17, 2002 Staff Leave a Comment

Yuba College offers many great vocational programs. One of these programs has a reputation for being the best in Northern California. However, the program is underutilized because not enough people have chosen to enter this field. Yuba College’s nursing program has been training the lifesavers that people depend on for the last 50 years. The program offers RN and LVN training. LVN (licensed vocational nurse) is four semesters and admits new students every fall. The RN program (registered nurse) is also four semesters long but requires two to three semesters of prerequisites to qualify. RN’s are ranked above LVN’s, and often go on to manage the hospital staff, including LVN’s. Nursing program director Betty Bonner, who has been with the program for 21 years, and director for two and a half, recognizes that a shortage of nurses exists throughout our state’s health care system. “We do have a wonderful reputation, yet there has continued to be a shortage for years,” said Bonner. In order to help recruit new students, Bonner said she and other members from the program participate in career fairs to help get the word out about the great opportunities that the nursing program can offer. The next fair will be held on Friday, May 17, 2002, from 12-7 p.m. at Fremont Hospital’s conference center. If you or any one you know might be interested in the possibility of nursing as a career, please contact Betty Bonner at 741-6785.
