Twenty-three of 108 community colleges in the state of California have residence halls, but there might be only 22 next year. Osuna Hall at Yuba College may be forced to close its doors or raise the rent for dorms. The current cost to live at the dorms is $2,297.50 per semester. Next year that could increase by as much as $1,000. Last year Governor Gray Davis cut $123 million from community colleges’ funds; $98 million was from instructional material and routine maintenance. “It’s very unfortunate how the budget cuts are affecting our college students,” said Elizabeth Bowman, California. School. Employee. Association. President. Bowman has been working as the Campus Life/Residence Hall Coordinator for three years and is having a hard time with the possibility of the residence hall shutting down. “For the past three years I have had the rooms full, but now with the budget cuts it’s going to be a battle to keep the dorm open,” said Bowman. Cooper Hagans, a student at Yuba College, has lived in the dorms for five years. “I don’t really have any opinion on the budget cuts, but I do feel bad for the future students. I came here to get my degree and that’s it. I’ll leave the politics to the politicians,” said Hagans.
