When the college police issue tickets, most students do not take them too seriously. This, however, can turn out to be a costly mistake. Common violations, such as parking without a permit or parking in a timed zone for longer than the allowed time, are not too expensive, ranging $15 to $20.
However, illegally parking in a handicapped zone is not so painless. A $325 fine is issued to anyone parked in a handicapped zone without a proper handicapped placard displayed. Displaying a lost or stolen parking permit will also put a dent on your bank account, costing the offender a $150 fine.
The prices of fines are also hefty if the vehicle has to be towed. Redemption of a towed vehicle will cost the owner between $50 and $70. Along with the towing fee, the vehicle owner must also pay a daily storage fee if the vehicle is kept longer than 24 hours. If a vehicle was cited, but was moved after a tow truck was called but it arrives, the vehicle owner is still responsible to pay the tow truck service fee.
Once a ticket is issued, the individual has 21 days to pay it. Payment can either be made in person or can be sent in through the mail. If the ticket is not paid by the initial 21-day period, a reminder is sent out, and the ticket price is doubled. A $4 late fee is also added to the citation. A still unpaid citation is reported to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. A vehicle cannot be registered to someone with an unpaid ticket on his or her record. Vehicle registration includes new vehicle registration as well as yearly registration.
What happens when a parking ticket is issued but not deserved? How do you fight a parking ticket at YCCD?
If you believe you have wrongly received a parking violation, there is a way to fight it. First, a Request for Review of Parking Violation Citation form must be filled out and submitted. The forms are available at the Police Department on the Marysville campus. They can also be found in the 100 Building of the Woodland Campus and the Administration Office at the Clear Lake Campus.
Though the forms are available at different campuses, they must be submitted to the Yuba College Police Department in Marysville. If mailing or delivering in person is not possible, the forms can also be faxed.
The disposition of the request will be available after five business days. To inquire about an appeal, call (530) 741-6771 or (530) 741-6772.
The Yuba Community College Police Department is seen by the State of California as a full-fledged police department. Operating 24/7, the department has a full-time Chief of Police, eight sworn in officers, and one full-time civilian personnel and student employees.
YCCDPD officers have to go through training just like public police officers do. Along with receiving the same basic training that city and county officers go through, YCCDPD officers also receive additional training relating to working in a campus environment.
Officers at YCCD have the authority to issue parking citations as well as moving citations. Further information about parking tickets and the Yuba Community College District Police Department can be found on their website at www.yccd.edu/police/index/htm. Numbers for the different campuses and hours of operation can also be found on their website.
