The Yuba-Sutter area is turning into a lush garden of blooming retail centers, causing local residents to salivate uncontrollably. Almost too much for the citizens of Yuba City to handle was the opening of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter off Highway 20.
Anticipation grew more and more as each brick was laid. And as the town pondered dangerously deep questions, such as “Which side of the Wal-Mart is the food going to be on?” workers put the finishing touches on the newly erected Supercenter. The workers declared that the manifest function of Yuba City was complete, as locals readied themselves for a retail revolution.
However, Yuba-Sutter residents should take a deep breath and not get too keyed up about the retail boom the area is experiencing or they will perish from overexcitement. When the opening of a Super Wal-Mart is the most exciting thing to happen in Yuba City since the Judd’s played Riverfront Park in 1992, there is a problem.
The word on the street is that an In and Out Burger is on its way to feed the fast food addicted residents of Yuba City.
This news is much bigger than any new Wal-Mart. The day In and Out opens in Yuba City will be a day that lives in infamy, remembered by all. The mayor will probably declare the day a local holiday. The townspeople will rejoice, showering the streets in fresh cut french fries and beef patties.
There will probably be an In and Out themed parade featuring Mini Ms. Yuba-Sutter-who will probably be scarfing down a double-double as she rides by in a 57′ Chevy. Oh, it will be a ball. But can the Yuba-Sutter residents handle such a tasty burger? We at The Prospector predict most will faint before they take their first bite.
It will probably take most local residents eight to twelve months to snap out of the dumbfounded double-double daze they are in, and come to grips with the reality of the retail renaissance the local area has gone through.
The reality is, ready or not, shopping in the Yuba-Sutter area has definitely become less of a fairytale and more of a reality.
This time last year, if you wanted to spend a day out shopping, you had three cities to choose from: Sacramento, Chico or Roseville. But now, finally you don’t have to fill up your tank to shop at a name brand store. Just empty the trunk and get ready to fill it with non-eco friendly plastic bags that are overflowing with overpriced retail items that we as Americans must have.
Though lifetime Yuba-Sutter residents are awed by all the excitement of retail grand openings, residents who have recently moved here from larger areas are a bit confused and bemused as to why there is such a commotion.
Though the retail centers that have recently opened are creating a vast improvement, as far as shopping goes for our little town, we still have a long way to go. The residents have been waiting for a state of the art movie theater for years, and a bookstore bigger than a walk-in closet would be much appreciated.
There is no doubt that this local area is going to keep expanding and new stores will be popping up faster than pimples on a teenager’s face. But eventually the awkward years will pass. So our advice to you is to embrace the changes and enjoy watching your young child of a city grow up right before your very eyes.
