Synthetic turf and nine shiny lanes equals a new track and field for Yuba College.
The rain held out until the ribbon was cut for the new complex on Saturday afternoon, October 23rd. The first phase of the complex is complete with lighted fields, new concessions stands, new restrooms, and the aforementioned synthetic turf and nine lane track. Grand stand seating will be added by next fall that will seat 1500 people.
The second phase should be finished by 2012. It will include a new classroom and a new gymnasium.
A few Yuba College Hall of Famers were in attendance. Ed Hicks drove all the way from Oakland with his wife and granddaughter. He exclaimed proudly, “Rain or shine I was going to show up.” He and his wife were beaming with excitement. He played football for Yuba College in the 50’s. “We won the first bowl win for Yuba College,” he said. He went on to later play for the Oakland Raiders. “Yuba College players used to play at the old Marysville High School field. This is a great facility compared to what we used to play on.” He addressed the other hall of famers present, “If you guys want to suit up, I will go out there with you.”
Rod Billby; Yuba College Athletic Director, Ron Peterson; a former coach at Yuba College, Marnee Crowhurst, wife of former football player the late Tom Crowhurst, Charlie McNiff; former Yuba College athlete, Susan Hawthorne; former Track and Field athlete, and George Suiza; former football player, were also in attendance.
As Matt Harsfall, a current football player for Yuba, was amped up and getting ready to go warm up on the field before the game said a few words, “I am grateful to be able to play on such a nice field. I am ready to play.”
