Brian Nelson came in second in the 800 meter in a Nor-Cal qualifying time of 1:55.39 at the Bay Valley Conference Championship finals in Santa Rosa on April 23. Julius Smith came in sixth in the 200 meter in 23.49 seconds, while the 4-by-100 relay team of Grant Joyner, Gary Parks, Charles Johnson and Smith came in second with an impressive time of 42.98 seconds. However, the men’s 4-by-100 relay was later disqualified at the state trials for the mishanding of the baton. Eight other colleges were also disqualified from the race.
For the women, Rachel Merriam was third in the 400 meter, running 59.79 seconds and Gavina Avila also took third in the triple jump, going the distance of 30 feet, 0.75 inches. Sarah States had already qualified in the javelin at the Bay Valley Conference Championship trials on April 20 in Sacramento, throwing a distance of 109’7″.
At the state meet on April 30, Merriam placed eighth in the 400 (1:00.44) and Avila was 12th in the triple jump (30’8.5″). These girls, along with Sarah will compete in state later in May.
