Season Roundup

May 7, 2001 Staff Leave a Comment

Though the Yuba College baseball team compiled a winning record, it was denied a playoff spot by a group of coaches at a meeting held Monday May 7th.With a week left in the regular season it looked as if the 49ers would capture a spot in the Northern California Playoffs. Two crucial losses to Cosumnes River College and Sierra College bumped Yuba (23-17) from second in the Bay Valley Conference to fourth. This would deny the 49ers a guaranteed spot in the playoffs and would leave the fate of Yuba’s playoff chances in the hands of the group of coaches. The BVC took the top three teams from the East Division for the playoffs.Yuba ended the season with a huge 7-6 win over Sacramento City College, ending the Panthers 14-game winning streak. Sac City had beaten Yuba 13-4 and 10-1 in the team’s two previous meetings.Freshman leftfielder Tory Davis and sophomore centerfielder Jake McConiga each made BVC first team. Sophomore pitcher Josh Glynn, freshman third baseman Jesse Larkins and freshman designated hitter J.J. Gibson made the BVC’s second team. Sophomore pitcher Kevin Jenson was an honorable mention.

The Yuba College women’s track and field team enjoyed a third place finish in the recent Bay Valley Conference Championships held at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento. Five women qualifed to compete in the Northern California Championships. Heather Contreras qualified for three events in the finals of the two day NorCal Championships. She made the finals in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter low hurdles. Brianna Cardenas will compete in the long jump and 100 hurdles in the finals while Ginny Wright moved on in the 400 hurdles and Makana Limary will throw the javelin in the finals. The 4-by-100 relay team of Rachael Mintz, Cardenas, Yvette Coleman and Wright will run in the finals. Mintz is an alternate in the 100 hurdles after finishing 10th in the trials. Cardenas and Mintz will compete in the heptathlon during the California State meet. The Yuba men’s team didn’t have much luck in the conference meet and qualifed four athletes to the NorCal meet. Sean Warner is an allternate for the javeling finals after placing 13th in the NorCal trials. He threw a Yuba school record in the javelin but the throw was scratched due to a foot fault.
