While Yuba College offers hundreds of classes, the times that those classes are scheduled are very limited. Some students end up with schedules that have them waiting two or three hours between classes. This is a situation that needs to be rectified. Currently, students cannot take all the classes they might like to take because so many of them are offered only sporadically. Students only grumble about this situation, and not much action is taken. This needs to change. As the students of Yuba College, we have a responsibility to inform the deans of every division that we would like to see particular classes offered more often. And if you think trying to find classes to fit your schedule during fall and spring semesters is difficult, try attending Yuba College during summer or intersession. Students who wish to attend classes during the summer or winter sessions to meet their graduation requirements are usually even more dismayed by the poor selection of class offerings. The classes that they need are not always offered during these sessions.
Again, speaking to the deans may be the best way to see some positive changes. We could also speak to Alan Lowe, the Vice-President of Instruction at Yuba College, or seek a collective voice through the student government. We may even wish to visit a Board of Trustees meeting en mass and call for an end to the hiring freeze that has paralyzed so many departments and severely limited our own opportunities.
These are the first steps. It is up to us to take them.
