The Yuba College Men’s soccer team, under head coach Jason Spain, continues the incredible start with an impressive 8-4-2 record and 7-3 in conference play. The 49ers defeated Modesto junior college, which had a six game wining streak in Bay Valley Conference, 4-3. The 49ers were led by Indy Johal, who scored two goals in the win.
“Indy has been playing great all year,” says freshman player Jonathan Lam.
Modesto controlled the ball early but was held in check by the great defensive play of Jayson Shaw, Jorge Alaniz, Eric Evans and Goalie Justin Berbena who had eleven saves. The offense was lead by Johal, Oliver Armstrong, Ernie Harris and Sean Nelson who got the 49ers on the board with their first goal.
The 49ers bounced back from a 4-1 loss to Santa Rosa, where Sean Nelson scored a goal in the first four minuets of the game, but Santa Rosa scored four unanswered goals. “I can’t believe we lost that one!” said Nelson who was still realigning from the loss. “We had that game!””(Santa Rosa) is a really good team, but we should have won that one,” said Armstrong who to was upset at the loss.
Even after a tough loss against Shasta, the 49ers are playing far beyond everyone’s expectations and should make a strong run for the playoffs by years end. Coach Jason Spain will have his team ready for the obstacles that remain for the rest of the season.
