With only eleven players on the roster, the Yuba College softball teams hopes and spirits were down and did not look good after starting the season with a disappointing 1-11 record.
“We had the early season jitters,” said head coach Stephanie Reynolds, whose team averaged three errors a game, in the first twelve games.Things would turn around once league started as the 49ers raced out to a 4-1 league record and was at the top of the Bay Valley Conference Silver division standings.
After a roller coaster ride, Yuba would end up finishing fourth in league play with a 10-8 record and an overall record of 18-23.
“I feel we had a successful season. After a slow start, we took off in league play and ended up finishing at the top half of our league,” said sophomore second baseman Kibbe La Chappa.
La Chappa ended up being the leader in most offensive categories batting with a .365 average and ended the season with a eleven game hit streak.
Team captain Taryn Schrekengost would help supply some power at the plate as well as being the teams vocal leader.
Liz Mabray caught fire halfway through the season after a career day at the plate in a league game against Laney College, where she hit for the cycle and had six RBIs. Later she was named Yuba College Athlete of the Week.
Pitching was led by Marisa Vodden, who pitched in more than half of the games for Yuba and was also named Yuba College Athlete of the Week. Schrekengost saw some quality time on the mound as the second pitcher in the rotation and did very well.
“It was a roller coaster ride the whole season. Our defense was shaky early on and hurt us in losing some close games, which we should’ve won,” said outfielder Trisha Almond.
