Wine, beer, deep-fried mushroom caps, and the death of a ponytail that would have given Willie Nelson envy. Interested yet? Then you should have been at Steven Spencer’s trustee campaign fund raiser.
A collection of friends, colleagues, well-wishers, and other curious onlookers attended the event held in the outdoor dining area beside the Silver Dollar Saloon on Friday, August 27th. The candidate, accompanied by his wife, entertained in an atmosphere that could best be described as “expectant.”
Why? Because the man himself, who served as Santa at the K-Street Mall in Sacramento, was willing to go that extra mile. He was willing to make a sacrifice that transcended the mere dignity and morals a campaign normally demands. He actually gave of himself. He was selling the rights for someone to cut off his ponytail in order to finance his bid for a position on the the Yuba College Board of Trustees.
Over two feet long, the length of shimmering white strands were. After their dismemberment, they were going to be donated to the Locks of Love charitable foundation, a non-profit group that receives donations of hair from the public which they later fashion into free, high quality wigs for chemo patients. Never before, in this righteously quaffed journalist’s opinion, has so much been given to a more deserving cause.
Or, for that matter, to a more deserving winner. Former classified staff member at the Clear Lake campus, Debbie Erhardt drew the winning raffle ticket (much to my chagrin, having given in to temptation and bought three). With scissors in hand, she lopped off Santa’s hidden secret to an applauding crowd consisting mostly of classified staff, professors, professors-turned adjutants and students from Yuba College.
The fund raiser was, it seemed, a huge success, bringing in $1,253.00.
David Wildman is described by many as “big, loud, obnoxious, opinionated, ill tempered, and arrogant.” A few (David Wildman included) have come to call him, “handsome, clever, and more humble than you’ll ever be.” Truly, this paragon of godless virtue is the most talented, least productive voice of our age.
