They’re full of 49er spirit and have a tough, competitive fire. This year’s Yuba College volleyball team looks to be a strong one.
New head coach Greg Chapman says his team is not to be underestimated, “even though they’re mostly freshmen they have a lot of off season experience playing for their high schools and clubs. They’re very competitive.”
Co-captain Mariza Quihuis, the only sophomore on the team, showed her aggressive spirit in the September 12 game against Chabot College. She helped her team score a victory 3games to 0.
According to coach Chapman, Quihuis and co-captain Krystle Wolocott are two of the team’s strongest players. Other strengths to the team include Middle hitter, Melissa Chapman (no relation to the coach) and outside hitter and Libero, Lindsey Straolzini.
The rest of the team includes outside hitter and defense specialist, Krystle Adams; outside hitter, Danielle Coppin; defense specialist, Katie Lizardo; outside hitter, Shawna Beall; setter, Sara Straolzini, and opposite, Liz Ledford.
New head coach Greg Chapman has coached for both Yuba City and Sutter high schools, as well as Casa Roble high school in Sacramento.
In just over two weeks the girls will face, whom Chapman feels is their toughest pre season competition, Shasta College and Butte College. As far as the season goes, Chapman is confident that his team is strong. He feels their biggest challenge this season will be both Solano College and Mendecino College.
The team may be small, but these girls have the competitive drive and fire to eliminate their competition and make Yuba College proud!
