Approximately 40 Yuba College Students arrived at the Marysville Campus on Saturday May 3 between 9 p.m. and 12 a.m. to head for the cafeteria. These students, dressed in tuxedos and formal dresses, were attending the first annual Yuba College Spring Formal, “Black Ties and Cleats.”
Although the event, sponsored by the Yuba College Volleyball Foundation, was small, the organizers thought it was a success. Thea Post, faculty advisor for the event, stated that the two main goals were to “cut event (on cost) and allow the Yuba College students a nice social event.”
Students danced and socialized throughout the evening, enjoying dance beats provided by “D.J. Joe” of the local company TSP D.J. Services. The D.J. played a majority of rap and hip-hop songs, but also let students request any specific songs that they wanted to hear.
Some student requests included a 50’s “bop” mix, and classic songs such as “Love-shack” and “Pour Some Sugar On Me.”
Students at the dance enjoyed desserts made by members of the Yuba College Volleyball team. The team members baked four types of cheesecakes, including New York Style, turtle, macadamia, and coffee. They also provided other types of cake and cookies.
Post was hoping to have 50 people come to the event to break even, but student committee chairperson, freshman Sara Moffit, approximated that only 40 people attended the dance. However, she reported that not only did the Yuba College Volleyball Foundation break even, but they even surpassed their costs by “roughly a couple $100.”
Moffit feels that the amount of people in attendance was a good turnout for the event. She said, “It was the first year, and not that many people knew about it. Hopefully now that the word is out, people will be excited to come to it next year.”
The entire dance was organized, coordinated, planned and run by members of the Yuba College Volleyball Team. Post stated, “They (the teammates) are doing it all: the decorations, the desserts, everything. They have done a very nice job with it all.”
She continued to say that in addition to all the time that they spent in advance planning the event, they met everyday of the week of April 27 through May 2 to finalize plans.
Moffit said that the time and effort spent to organize the dance was worth the outcome. She said, “It was a lot of fun. Even though not as many people came as we had hoped for, we had a lot of fun.”
Moffit’s hopes that more students will make an effort to come to next year’s formal. She said, “Come next year. Give it a shot. See how fun it is. I know that they will have fun if they come.”
