Under the leader the leadership of head coach, Stephanie Reynolds, the women’s softball team is looking to challenge and surprise a few teams in the Bay Valley Conference this season.
“Not many of the teams (in conference play) are expecting much from us this year, so I hope we can catch them by surprise,” said coach Reynolds, who is beginning her second season as the Yuba College softball coach.But with an impressive start of 4 and 0 by February 12, most of the players were looking for real competition.
“We haven’t seen much (competition) yet,” said left fielder Erin Porter. “But I’m pretty sure we will eventually.”The players should face their toughest challenge from Sacramento City and Delta, who most of the players and coaches agree are two of the best teams.
“Right now, Delta might be the toughest team on the schedule,” said assistant coach and former Yuba and Cal Poly player, Leilani Limary.Most of the players on the team have played since they could walk, so the group is very experienced.
“The game is more serious now than it was in high school. The players are a lot more dedicated now,” said pitcher Marisa Vodder, who has played since fifth grade.
“This may be one our best teams,” Reynolds added. “Were correcting some of our early mistakes and were getting a good chemistry with this unit.”
This may be the year that the softball team gets the respect that they’ve been looking for. With a strong start to the season, don’t be surprised to see women’s softball team in the playoffs by season’s end.
