Sophomore Brian Boss participated in football, wrestling, and baseball all four years that he attended Yuba City High School before coming to Yuba College in 2009. With the Yuba City Honkers the varsity 08-09 baseball team, Boss had an impressive .347 batting average, as well as a .963 fielding percentage. The statistics he racked up caught the attention of Yuba College’s Coach Gloyd, who recruited him as a catcher for the 49ers.
Baseball has been his passion while at Yuba College, and while trying to finish all of his general education requirements, he still manages to find the time to practice with the team. The 20-year-old Boss said, “I have been a catcher most of my life,” and when asked why he chose that position to play he smiled, “I get the ball all the time.”
Despite not having a very good season last year, Boss continues to persevere. The 2011 Bay Valley Conference Overall Statistics (as of February 22, 2011) paints a picture of a determined young player. Brian Boss’ batting average was .300 with a .714 fielding percentage. “I’m trying to play baseball as long as I can,” he said.
As well as supporting the team, he has volunteered to work with local youth ages 5-16 teaching them the fundamentals of baseball at the Peach Tree Little League Camp which was held at Yuba City High School in January. In addition, he assisted the Kiwanis Club with serving dinners at Rideout Hospital in Marysville, California; in celebration of the Hospital’s 100th Anniversary (December 2007).
For the local high school students coming to Yuba College for their first year, Boss offers this advice: “Work hard as you can, and enjoy it.”
