During the week of April 30 through May 4, the Associated Students of Yuba College (ASYC) is holding elections for Student President, Vice President, Secretary, Business Director, Activities Director, Communications Director and Senators, for the 2001/2002 academic year.”I’m hoping that the new elected student body gets students more involved with the campus because right now not many students care what’s going on here,” said Irene Ramos, a student at Yuba College.Students running for office are campaigning April 23 through the 27.”A problem in the past with the student government was that the students in the ASYC worked in Yuba College’s student services. This is like the president telling the senators what to do,” said Ramiro Canto-Lugo, a language arts professor at Yuba College and advisor for ASYC in 1999.Elizabeth Bowman, the administrative secretary for the Campus Life office, is the current advisor for the ASYC. Members of the ASYC meet every Thursday, from noon to 1 p.m. in the ASYC office in the cafeteria.Canto-Lugo is hoping that this year’s elections bring students who have a fresh start.”They should be new students at Yuba College who do not use their positions in the ASYC for personal gains,” said Canto-Lugo. “Students running for office should know the by-laws of the student body and know that the student body is independent. They also need to know and respect the constitution of student government.” Students like Ramos expect that at the minimum, student officers have some knowledge of what they are doing.
