The Associated Students of Yuba College (ASYC) held a Black History Quiz event this week in the 300 building from 11am to 1pm. As activities director Kelly Monaghan was conducting the event on Thursday, February 17Th, she shared that the goal was, “To promote diversity on campus.”
Participants were given a twenty question quiz. The answers were all African Americans throughout history and today. When asked how she thought she would score, Makayla Calonje said, “I’m pretty good at black history, so okay… but not the best.”
For those who did do the best, or at least close to the best, prizes were to be awarded privately after all the quizzes were graded. They included movies such as “For Colored Girls”, “Madea Goes to Jail”, and “The Great Debaters”.
One participant, Michael DeFranco, was a former history major who shared black history facts with members of the ASYC and other quiz takers.
Angel Orejel was intent on getting as many correct as he could. He spent at least ten minutes working to match the right person with each achievement. Others contemplated it as they ate their lunches. It was definitely difficult – not all answers were as commonly known as Oprah or Martin Luther King Jr.
Student’s can look forward to another event put on by the ASYC this Earth Day.
