Have you ever noticed that the slew of summer blockbuster movies never seems to be of high quality? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a great mind-numbing flick now and then, but you have to admit, these so-called blockbusters are synonymous, in my opinion, with mindless eye-candy. This summer’s line up (unfortunately) is no exception. Some of these movies are sequels or based on previously explored ideas: “Spiderman”, “Star Wars” episode a jillion (will they ever stop?), “Scooby Doo” (gag me with a Scooby snack) and the much-anticipated “Men in Black 2” (I’d rather take a swift jab in my eye) What about the sad excuse for quality family films like Disney’s latest animated venture “Lilo and Stitch”? An alien from outer space (that looks like a deformed koala bear) is adopted from a pound by a little girl who tries to pass him off as a dog. Who are the geniuses that came up with that plot? Disney must be getting desperate. I wouldn’t be surprised if chapter 11 bankruptcy is filed in the near future. I am disappointed with Hollywood and their gross underestimation of the Americans’ intelligence. This is the technological revolution, the Internet, cyber sex and nutrition facts on every morsel of food that touches our lips. Not to mention that more people are enrolled or will graduate college than ever before in history. If the general public has evolved so much in the past 25 years, why can’t the movies aimed at the average Joe reflect our intelligence? I have to admit, I did like “The Radiers of the lost Arc”, and the “Terminator” kicked a little cyborg butt. I guess summer flicks aren’t ALL bad. As long as the American people realize that the production companies are only trying to drain our pockets (and maybe our intelligence) there’s no harm done. See you at the show!
