Tennis teams preparing for conference tourney

The Yuba College men’s and women’s tennis teams continue their success as both teams keep racking up the wins. In the most recent match though, the 49ers men’s team was blanked by Cabrillo College 5-0 in the first round of the Northern California Regional Tennis Tournament. The 49ers, ranked as the eighth seed, got great efforts from John Lester, Anton Talle, David Xiong, Jaivir Sidhu and Neil Hilleary. Yuba coach Josh Prager was unavailable for comment as his team is preparing for the Bay Valley Conference tournament.Before that match, the 49ers faced Butte College in a Bay Valley Conference match on April 9. Both the men’s and women’s team earned a win. The men’s team won five singles matches and two doubles matches in beating Butte 7-2. Matt Rodrigues (6-4, 6-1), Lester (6-0, 6-4), Sidhu (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) and Hilleary (2-6, 6-1, 6-4) all won their singles matches, while Xiong won via default. In doubles play, the team of Lester-Sidhu and Hilleary-Rodrigues won their respective matches. The women’s team also beat Butte 7-2. Becky Kiehn (6-0, 6-3), Jennie Miracle (6-2, 6-2), Cindy Lopez (7-6, 6-1) and Shauna Reynoso (2-6, 6-1, 6-1) easily took care of their singles matches. The team of Kiehn-Reynoso, Miracle-Donna Buttacavoli and Amy Vallier-Lopez won their doubles matches.

The 49ers tennis team has also been rewarded with its outstanding play as two of its players have been named as the Yuba College Athlete of the Week. Lester and Miracle have both been honored with the award.
