Yuba College has a really good Mass Communications program; however, an aspiring film student will find that none of the Mass Comm classes will get him or her into any type of film school. The problem lies in articulation. None of the film classes at Yuba College articulate into any of the UC’s or CSU’s. Although that doesn’t make it impossible to get into one of these schools, it will make it extremely difficult once a student gets there. First of all, the classes you should have taken at a community college are classes that are required for a film major. If you haven’t taken those classes you will be behind in your major and the amount of work that would have taken four years will have to be done in two. There are other options for the young, or old, aspiring film maker. There are many different film schools out there that would be much easier to get into than a UC. The New York Film Academy has a campus located in Los Angeles that has a one year film program with a concentration on Directing, among other programs such as cinematography and screen writing. There is also the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and the Vancouver Film School in Canada. These types of film schools are expensive, tuition being as high as $26,000 a year. At a UC you’d be paying close to the same amount per semester. So if you have images in your head that need to be burned onto film than you might want to make some noise at Yuba College to get the help you. Or you could get into the Robert Rodriguez guerilla film making style, forget about film school, save your money, make your own small films and keep making them bigger and better until the day you get noticed. As the great Machine Head put it, “It’s all about the blood, the sweat, the tears!”
