“Who am I?” is a common question you would be asking throughout your entire life — from the moment you are born, to the moment you pass on to a greater place. This can be in the form of a job, personality, school, social status, etc.
In the mindset of a college student, the statement “I do not know what I want to be,” is front and center in my head. I have received the question of deciding a major, or what job I want when I graduate. But, not knowing right away is perfectly okay! It is only the first few weeks of college for everyone — decided on a major/path, or undecided. For example, I knew someone very close to me in my family who went to college a long time ago planning to become a music teacher, but ended up choosing a different career. So, changing majors can be a major role in being who you were meant to be.
I have been searching all across the web at different kinds of futures, job pathways, and even colleges. My number one idea for any sort of future would be one in game design, and/or some sort of animating job. A lot of people I knew thought that I shouldn’t even attempt going down this path, due to it being too competitive, or not able to make me a reliable future. But, my advice would be to never give up solely based on what others have to say. Treat their degrading opinions as fuel to be an even better you. I spent plenty of time looking, and surfing around the web, for different colleges I could attend, and jobs I could gain.
And now, sharing those resources is what I intend to do. I will provide some of the websites I used when searching for future plans:
- www.niche.com : My experience with the website is great! This is one of my favorite places to look at, and search for, possible future colleges. On the site, there is a college quiz to find which schools match your wants the most. You can favorite schools and narrow them down on your personal list. A lot can be done on the website — so this is a great place to look.
- bigfuture.collegeboard.org : This website I experienced just recently, but wow! I was thoroughly impressed. There is a step-by-step college quiz where you can narrow down your search, and find a college that is right for you. I found a couple of options with this website, like I did for Niche, but I like the options here better.
- And of course — Google! When all else fails, just use Google. Type in something like “ideas for a major,” or “majors or jobs having to do with ____.” Then, many websites with plenty of suggestions or information will come up.
I only have one more kind of tip for you: The only thing to worry about when looking for a path to follow is your own mind holding you back. Just tell yourself that it is okay to not know what you want to become right now; decisions come over time. Knowing where to start is a good choice, and take it one step at a time.
