The Yuba College nurse, Cindy Snelgrove, does not just come to work, perform her duties and go home. She loves what she does, and it is evident in the way that she speaks of her goals for the Health Services program and in the list of health related events that she has brought to Yuba College.
“I’m really enjoying working with the college students,” said Snelgrove, who began her position at Yuba College five months ago. “I’m working with younger people. I have a new perspective working with younger students,” she said.
Snelgrove balances her time between the Marysville, Woodland and Clear Lake Campuses.
A former Yuba College student, Snelgrove is a graduate of Butte Community College where she earned her LVN before becoming an RN. She attended Chico State University and graduated with a BSN and PHN with honors in May of 2001.
Snelgrove is currently affiliated with the University of Phoenix as a student in her seventeenth course for the MSN/MBA/HCM program. She is pursuing a dual master’s degree.
In describing her goals for the health program at Yuba College, Snelgrove remarked, “My mission is to assist the students in preventing illness and promoting wellness so that they may meet and exceed their academic and personal goals.”
Snelgrove added, “I will provide individualized and quality nursing care while maintaining the strictest of confidentiality.”
Some of the services that are provided by Yuba College health services include first-aid care for any on-campus injury, health screenings, illness prevention and health maintenance education, as well as referrals to health organizations within the community.
Snelgrove stresses that students are covered by an accident insurance policy up to a maximum of $20,000 liability for any on-campus activity or school-related activity off-campus. This insurance acts as a secondary accident insurance coverage and will pick up any excess claims from a student’s primary insurance to the limit of its liability. If a student lacks a primary health insurance, this policy provides primary coverage up to its limit. The fees for this insurance are paid by Yuba College students at the time of registration.
Another way that Snelgrove is helping to improve the safety of Yuba College students is by bringing automated external defibulators to campus.
“These will be good for all students, but especially in the area of sports, where an incident would be more likely to occur,” Snelgrove said.
One defibrillator will be in the health center, the other in the gym. A defibrillator transmits electric shock to anyone found to be unconscious or not responding. A team of ten college staff, including Snelgrove, will be trained to use the defibulators in case of such an emergency. The other staff are from the Yuba College Police Department and the Physical Education Department.
Prior to being employed at Yuba College, Snelgrove was a Lead Allergy RN/Asthma Educator, Home Health Case Manager / Relief Nurse / Certified Optician and Manager, Certified Dispensing Optician. She was On Call Per Diem RN/LVN with the Fremont-Rideout Health Group.
“Exposure to the various medical specialties certainly taught me how to be flexible and was a pleasant introduction to nursing,” Snelgrove said. ” I have several career goals, but my immediate objective is to be the best Health Services Nurse possible so that I may provide quality care for students.”
The Health Center at the Marysville campus is located in building 100B, room number 122. At the Woodland campus, the Health Center is located in the 700 building and the 400 building at the Clear Lake campus.
