We have two wonderful theatres in our area. They give us a variety of entertainment, history, exercise, socialization and more.
If you want to attend some great performances then you don’t need to go far. Right here in Woodland we are privileged to have The Woodland Opera House located on Main Street. Tours are offered of this historical landmark that was built in 1885, burned and reopened in 1895.
The Woodland Opera House has a wide range of performances. Typically they hold plays and musicals that are geared for family audiences and a few that are children’s performances, seven plays/musicals for this season.
The Opera House has other events and shows as well. They have had musical groups ranging from “a one man show”, flutists, holiday choir groups, musical tributes, to acts that are a singing quartet, swing, country, bluegrass washboard, classical, and much more. Coming up on March 24, they will hold their first Family Talent Show. The Musical Oliver is opening March 30.
Classes are also offered through the Opera House. These encompass drama, voice, acting, dance, and a summer youth camp, as well as other classes. The classes are for children up to adults, so anyone can benefit from what the Woodland Opera House has to offer.
Davis Musical Theatre Company (DMTC) is located in Davis at the new Hoblit Performing Arts Center, located on Pena Dr. This theatre is new and exciting. There are ten productions that are performed annually and out of that, four of the productions are geared for children. DMTC holds performances of local, regional and touring musical artists. The musical Alice in Wonderland opens in May, and for all of you who are fans of The Who, Tommy will open in July as the summer rock concert.
The children can get involved in the Summer Youth Workshop. This is an opportunity for children to learn dance, acting, singing, and other general performing skills.
For productions at both WHO and DMTC, auditions are open to children through adults, so if you are the type that likes to be in the limelight rather than sitting back and enjoying the show, then you can try out for a part in a play or musical.
The theatres have something for everyone. For more information about Woodland Opera House, check out their website at www.wohtheatre.org. If you want information about DMTC, you can look them up at www.dmtc.org.
