When spring break started the Yuba College baseball team had a league record of 2-5 and was having trouble winning games, trying to stay in the hunt in the Bay Valley Conference. When Spring break ended, Yuba had a 7-7 league record and is only three games out of first. The team has won five out of its last seven games heading into the last part of the season. ” This has been a lot of fun the last couple of weeks; we have been playing some good ball and beat some very good teams,” said team captain and first baseman Neil Logue. Logue, who has been on fire lately, boosted his batting average up 30 points to .310 and has 22 RBIs. It all started when Yuba played its last game before spring break against Sacramento City College and upset them 6-5. “This game was awesome and hard fought,” said outfielder Garret Wilson. “We fell behind early but came back late and won which was probably the biggest game of the year yet.” In the next six games Yuba would lose two and win four. The losses came from league leading Cosumnes College by a score of 9-5 and Contra Costa College 12-9 in a game which included six total errors. Another huge win came when Yuba beat American River College on their home turf 8-3. Yuba Pitcher Wes Porter tore apart the Beaver line-up, giving up only two earned runs. Other players shining for the 49ers is pitcher A.J. Holland who has three saves and two wins has seen a lot of action as of late. Pitcher Steve Briggs has dropped his ERA down to 2.45 and won the game against Sacramento City. “Our pitching has been beautiful lately, and I hope we can keep it up,” said Logue. With less than a month left in the season, Yuba finds itself in a very good position with a 7-7 record in league tied with Sierra College and is only three games back of first place.
