The Associated Students of Woodland Community College is running a canned food drive working with the Food Bank of Yolo County. The food drive is scheduled to run until December 15 with weekly counts of cans and a collection on Wednesdays.
“We want to give back to those in need this holiday season,” explained ASWCC Vice President Stephanie Beaver-Adler. She said that if everyone brought a single can WCC would have approximately 3,000 cans and the college could make a difference in our community.
Holiday decorated barrels located throughout the school provide an easy spot for students to drop off their donations. “This canned food drive has been put on for the last couple of years and we want to keep the tradition alive,” explains Beaver-Adler.
Professor Kellogg’s English 51 class is running to show its own holiday spirit by sponsoring a coin drive to raise money for the Yolo County Food Bank. This has been a tradition for the past five years, usually generating over $200 for food.
The Woodland Community College E.O.P. S, in conjunction with the Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education program, is hosting a “Secret Santa” event for the children of CARE members. CARE is a program that helps single parents in EOPS attain an education. Neli Gonzalez-Diaz, EOPS specialist and CARE coordinator is facilitating the Secret Santa celebration along with other EOPS staff.
“This is a yearly tradition, a time to bring kids and parents together for the holidays,” Gonzalez-Diaz said.
CARE members give the staff an idea to what their kids want for the holidays, and the teachers then choose a family to help out and donate to.
About 24 students and their families will participate in a dinner party held at the lounge were Professor Lee Mitchel is expected to dress up as Santa Claus and deliver the presents.
There will also be arts and crafts for the children and a raffle for the parents to participate in.
Peggy Harrell, a member of the CARE program said, “It’s hard to buy presents when you go to school fulltime. This Secret Santa is awesome. It helps to give holiday gifts under the tree for my kids that would otherwise not be there.”
