Turnovers costly for 49ers in home opener

September 23, 2005 Staff Leave a Comment

Football season has arrived full force for the Yuba College 49ers this year. The 49ers non-conference games are featured with some of the best teams around. Coach Hoal believes this will help the team prepare for the significant conference games come October.

“We got the best teams we could find, so our guys are prepared for the critical games and are able to play against teams with similar styles that we will see in the coming weeks.” Coach Hoal said.

The 49ers traveled to the College of the Siskiyous to take on the Eagles in the season opener. It was a close 13-11 win for the 49ers.The 49ers shut down the Eagle offense to a mere 124 yards. The one thing holding the 49ers from racking up the score was costly turnovers.

The turnover bug bit the 49ers again in the home opener against Monterey Peninsula Lobos, but the results were less fortunate.

The first quarter started strong for the 49ers, with an Edd Johnson interception turning into a nice drive with quarterback Trevor Stoehr hooking up with Marcus T Allen for the touchdown.

The 49ers were shut out the second and third quarter, while the Lobos piled two field goals, a touchdown and a two point conversion.

During the second quarter, penalties began flying in against the 49ers. A crucial defensive pass interference call allowed the Lobos to move down field, and eventually shift the game away from the 49ers.

“The call changed the momentum for us.” Said Marcus T Allen. “Our defense lost some motivation.”

The Lobos accumulated a total of 3 turnovers in the 3rd quarter, to which the Lobos controlled the game.

The 49ers scored on another Stoehr-Allen touchdown early in the 4th quarter, but Monterey had accumulated 10 unanswered points to keep the 49ers late rally at bay. Final score 24-14 Monterey Peninsula over Yuba College.
