Are you a fan of wrestling and athletic entertainment? Yuba’s City’s own Calvary Christian Center presents 6 separate Ultimate Championship Wrestling (UCW) events every year. The event coordinators go all out for these shows, which take place in their large gymnasium. The lights, the smoke, the musical theme songs of the individual wrestlers, world titles and championship belts, the humor, the drama, the quibbles and arguments, the no-holds barred matches that consist of chairs, ladders, trash cans, and flying leaps off soda machines- it’s all there. The best part… admission is only $4 for general and $5 for ringside. UCW is a non-profit organization and all proceeds are donated.
UCW is something that has been right under our noses in Yuba City for many years. March Madness Xlll, the wrestling event in March, was exactly what it claims. Madness, in all of its awesomeness. I was made aware of these shows by a fellow classmate, and was surprised to see almost a dozen Yuba College students participating in the March Madness show last month. From choreographing, to wrestling, to managing wrestlers, these participants put on a show that rivals the quality of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) that you see on television. The planning that goes into these events is impressive; the events are amazing to see in person, even if, like me, you aren’t a big fan of wrestling.
The skill and athletic ability of these performers was clearly visible. Although the matches were choreographed, the danger factor and chance of receiving a real injury was always present. These people put their lives at risk, not for money as wrestlers on television do, but for the love of the sport, the love of performing and entertaining, and their love of their church and the missionaries they support. Last year, UCW alone raised enough money to buy a sport utility vehicle for missionaries in a foreign country through Speed The Light.
Look forward to more March Madness Xlll photos as we will be posting a full slide show.
*Coming Soon* UCW will be hosting D-Day on May 6th, 2011. Doors open at 6:30, show starts at 7:00. Tickets are $4 or $5 for ringside and military personnel get in free with Military i.d. in Honor of Memorial Day.
