The Variety Show, held once a semester at the main campus of Yuba Community College, is a family-friendly-no-judges-allowed event held in the auditorium. The first show of the 2012-2013 school year will be held at 12 p.m.,Thursday, November 15.
Robert Mathews, a music professor at Yuba College, encourages students to bring their whole family to the event.
Auditions were held Wednesday, October 17th at 2:30 p.m. in the theatre, which included acts featuring a variety of talents. Acts ranged from moving poetry about child abuse, to vocal covers of popular songs to the stride piano, a type of piano music that has great emphasis on improvisation, to acapella. There were auditions with a group as small as one person, auditioning for four, to groups of ten.
With a viola, electric guitar, a ukulele, a French horn and other instruments, it’s easy to assume the performance will be one of a kind. After auditions, student Rachael Fuentes said, “We’re a group of music majors; we’ve all been friends for a while. Mario wrote the medley, it was our first time rehearsing together actually.”
Assuming one to be nervous when going on stage so unrehearsed, Fuentes admits, “I was nervous, I do get stage fright, but it turns into energy; it’s like a high.”
This event, that’s open to the public, even has free parking from 11:30-1:30! Otherwise, a parking pass would have cost two dollars. Israel Gonzalez, the mastermind of the idea, said “There were too many students on campus complaining that nothing was going on.”
