Yuba College volleyball has seen a rough start this season. Having lost most of their matches so far, the team is trying to rally for a strong finish.
“We are not a tall team in some places,” said Coach Post, “and we are playing some strong teams that use our weaknesses against us.”
On September 21, Yuba College’s Volleyball team was sorely defeated by Shasta College. Shasta dominated all three sets: 22-30, 23-30, 24-30. Though they were at times playing a game of Cat and Mouse, the 49ers were no match for the Shasta Knights.
Then on September 28 Yuba College went head to head with Butte College.
“We really stepped it up,” said team captain Rachel Norton. “We came together as a team, and fought hard.
The team did not fight hard enough, however, because once again the 49ers lost all three sets: 7-30, 21-30, 18-30. During the last set the 49ers had the Roadrunners scrambling for the first half, but the Butte women soon caught up to trump us.
“I had mixed emotions after the game,” said player Ashley DeMello. “It was hard to watch because I was out.”
DeMello is out of the games for now due to an injury obtained trying to save a ball during the Santa Rosa Classic that hurt her knee. The extent of her injury is unknown at this time. She had it examined at Kaiser on October 4.
Though Yuba College’s Volleyball team has struggled this season, loosing all their home games, the handful of exuberant fans at the games never seem to be let down by the losses. They continue to cheer, stomping their feet on the bleachers and never giving the court a silent moment.
In fact, one game the coaches had to step up and ask the fans to stop shouting obscenities during the game. This led to the coaches making a pre-game announcement that anyone using offensive language during play will be asked to leave the game.
With only six games into the season, the outlook is staying positive among the girls, hoping they will find their stride. It seems though that they have begun to find their stride with their recent win at Laney College on September 30. They won all three sets against the Laney Eagles: 30-10, 30-12, 30-15. Thus, the 49ers have started off the bay Valley Conference on a very high note.
“We enter as strangers,” Coach Post said to The Prospector last September, “but we leave as family.”
