The Yuba College Women’s Volleyball team is entering its 20th season with Coach Thea Bordsen-Post at the helm. The team is hoping to compete in the newly aligned Bay Valley Conference where in past years the divisions in the conference were determined by the strength of the programs.
“The outlook for this season is great,” Post said. “I think we will do very well in our conference. We are hoping to be first or second.”
The team assembled this year has an arsenal of weapons at its disposal. Most notable is Emily Trudgeon, fresh from Yuba City High with her most notable feature being a southpaw on this team, hopefully to give the opposing team a spin. Also fresh from high school are Sutter alumni Mariza Quihuis and Valerie Eredia. Both will be used primarily for defense this season. However, Quihuis will also be used as an outside hitter.
Returning power player Ashley DeMello and setter Rachel Norton are former rivals from high school, DeMello from Wheatland and Norton form Sutter. Two transfer students mostly unknown to the program are Ashley Johnson from Texas, who looks to be a good blocker for the team, and Ceia Font from North Carolina.
Font is also the sister of L’Orelle Font, who is also on the team. Fresh to the Volleyball team, Stephanie Cardenas is no stranger to Yuba College sports, participating in Baseball and Basketball as well, bringing a sense of leadership to the team.
“I really like this team,” Post said. “They are really hard working and dedicated. I really, really like this team.”
As likeable as they are, unfortunately the 49ers lost their first home match of the season to the College of the Siskiyous (30-26, 30-24, 30-24) on September 2. Then the women ranked fifth in the Yuba Invitational on September 3.
The losses did not break the team’s sprit, however, as they went on to defeat Sierra College on an away game on September 7 (30-23, 31-29, 30-19).
But the women suffered another loss on September 9 during a home match against Southwest Oregon (30-24, 30-26, 30-20).
On September 17 in an away match in the Sanata Rosa Tournament, they lost five games by a total of 10 points and finished the tournament in the second round of the playoff bracket. The 49ers came out of the pool 1-2 to Eastern Utah.
“We are weak on out outside hitters, but we got strengths in other areas,” Post said.
The team is helping to celebrate Post’s 20th year as a valued coach at Yuba College.
