The Yuba College women’s basketball team survived a rough season as they faced off against various Division 1 teams. Their season record of 3-19 illustrates the difficulties the 49ers had to overcome throughout the year.
After losing several key players last year, Head Coach Bob Brown had a tough job trying to unite his young team. Going into this year, Coach Brown had a specific plan for his team. He wanted to keep his expectations simplefor the team, and see where they could go from there.
“We’ve been concentrating mainly on building up our program,” said Brown. “As a young and new team, we have much to work on; hopefully we can continue to improveas we go along.
One factor that the 49ers lacked this year was height. The average height of the girls ranged from 5’4″ to 5’6″, something that was definitely not helpful as they faced off against teams that were much taller than they were. This played a big part in the difficulties the 49ers had to face.
Since the majority of the team wasn’t able to benefit from their height, speed and strength was the main focus for improvement in the girls’ playing.
According to Coach Brown, sophomore Alexzandra Rico and freshman Coco Bargainer were big factors in helping the 49ers build up their power and strength. Brown was impressed with the two girls’ abilities.
“Rico has been one of the leading players this year,” said Brown, “and Coco Bargainer has greatly improved over the season.”
Coach Brown was happy to have the two girls on his team; they were great assets throughout the season, said Brown.
Player Nikki Allen also had some surprising moves up her sleeve. In one of the final home games against San Joaquin Delta, Allen scored three 3 pointers in the last two minutes of the game. Although the Mustang’s won 37-91, Allen’s efforts for her team was appreciated.
Even though it hadn’t been an easy season, the girls still had a great time playing the sport they love and working together as a team.
“That’s the best part about being here,” said player Alexzandra. “the team unity here is amazing. We work hard to establish team strength and spirit.
Coach Miller agrees. He commented that the girls relate well to one another, and they encourage each other throughout everything.Even though the team was young, they were still able to learn how to work as a team.
For the next season, Coach Brown has better plans for his team. He is expecting several new players, ranging from 6’0″ to 6’2″ in height, to join the team. This will significantly help the 49ers gain more advantages in size.
Along with size, Brown is looking forward to improving their speed, defense, and shooting precision. In all truth, his hopes are that the 49ers will be able to improve on “everything.”
