The women had their first Bay Valley Conference win on January 28 over Cosumnes River College. The women dominated 79-53 and at halftime, Yuba was in the lead 36-24. Coach Bob Brown not only was happy because it was their first win, but because “it was such a rare event that all the ladies scored”.
Elaine McCaulley led the team with 21 points, Alisha Taylor had 12, and Evelyn Meinen chipped in 11.
On Tuesday, February 1, the women’s basketball team traveled to nearby Sacramento, looking for another BVC win. However, it wasn’t so. Yuba (6-13, 1-17) lost 75-70 in overtime, after having a four point lead, and their chance of another BVC win. Their first BVC win was against Cosumnes 79-58 on the January 28.
The women led 33-30 at halftime, but once both teams became tied at 60, the scorekeeper stopped scores for Yuba, so no individual scores are available.
Coach Brown felt that the women should have won the game. He said, “This game should have been our win. We were in the lead most of the game, and we should have been able to take this one home.”
Then on February 4, the women lost 78-60 to Napa. With 15 minutes left to play, Yuba was down 48-35. That is until Trista Rossi drove the ball down the court, pressed the defense and passed the ball to Stephanie Cardenas. The ball then was passed to Taylor who netted a 3-pointer. Rachel Norton then scored two more 3’s and closed the gap with a 52-46 score.
Napa’s Bernadette White scored a game high 33 points, of which 32 were in the first half.
On Tuesday, February 8, Yuba lost a heartbreaking 69-75 against American River. Coach Brown said that McCaulley had finally reached the amount of points that she should be averaging since she reached a game high 27 points. Cocoa Barganier added 18 for Yuba.
The women almost had another BVC win to add to their record but with 20 seconds left, the women were behind 71-69. Cardenas had taken an inbound pass, threw the ball to Rossi who attempted to net a three-pointer. The ball rebounded and American River’s Hennessey Rodgriguez caught the ball. Cardenas had fouled Rodriguez, who then netted both free throws, bringing the score to 73-69.
