The Yuba College women’s basketball team under new head coach Dave Parsh, stumbled to a record of 3-5 after a 3-1 start. The odd were against eh 49ers from the start with the departure of old head coach Sue Crebbin and key players, Rachel Barker and Liz Jacobsen. Jacobsen decided to finish her junior college career in her home state of Oregon. The 49ers will have the services of last years leading scorer Marie Nygard who was an Honorable Mention on the all-conference team last season. Another key returnee is Sarah Webster who was stepped up her offensive game this season. Webster scored a career high 46 points in a 66-62 win over Barstow during the College of the Sequoias Tournament on November 15-17. Webster also scored 30 points in a loss against Long beach City during the same tournament.
The 49ers have also gotten a boost from Liz Mabray, Alexandra Rico and women’s soccer goalie Erin Cunningham. Coming fresh off a playoff appearance with the soccer team, Cunningham scored 13 points and had 8 steals in a 62-55 win over Modesto. Webster contributed with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Rico pitched in with 10 points.
The 49ers are trying to rebound after an 81-43 loss against Siskiyous.
The 49ers were once again led by Webster who scored 12 points; Cunningham scored 11 and by Mabray who grabbed 7 rebounds. The 49ers have a young team and can only learn from their early mistakes. The season is young, as well and the 49ers still have a better than great shot to turn the season around and make another playoff birth.
