The Yuba College women’s tennis team made a strong standing against the Consumnes College team in their recent game at the Yuba City Racquet and Health Club on February 19. No. 1 player Becky Kiehn dominated over Consumnes’ No.1 seed Jillien Baker with a solid win of 6-0, 6-3 in her match. Playing her first set near to perfection, Kiehn kept Baker running with powerful serves and precise backhand hits. Her match record is currently 5-1, a good start for the season.
“I have definitely improved since last year,” said Kiehn. “I am really confident that I’ll make State, since I made it last year.”
Also bringing in a win for the 49ers was No. 2 player Jennie Miracle who played No.2 seed Charlene Lee. Miracle, whose season record is 3-1, won her match 6-4, 6-2.
“My season has started off really well,” said Miracle. “This is my last year, and I hope to do well for the team.”
No. 3 seed Mary Lawrie and No.4 seed Holly Bowman had a little more challenging matches. Lawrie dropped her match to Sarah Geieske 6-2, 6-2, and after the longest game of the afternoon, Bowman defeated opponent Amanda Wingo 6-2, 6-1.
In the doubles matches, the No. 1 team of Kiehn and Lawrie won 6-0, 6-2, while Miracle and Bowman teamed up to defeat Geieske and Wingo 6-2, 6-4.
“We’re getting better each game,” said assistant coach Helen Prager. “Right now we’re working on quick foot speed on the court and body technique.”
Coach Prager agreed with his wife, and had a touch of humor in response to the 49ers excellent matches.
“We’re doing good,” he said, adding that the team uniforms gave his players a sense of team camaraderie and an extra boost of energy. “We did well today because the girls played with their team shirts!”
