The Yuba College Volleyball team attended the Saturday September 20 Pasadena Invitational in Pasadena California, as the only team at the tournament invited from Northern California. The 49ers played Moorpark College, Santa Monica College, El Camino College and Riverside College. Yuba lost to all but Moorpark with whom they split the sets with. Yuba College head coach, Thea Post said, “We didn’t do a lot of winning. There were a lot of tough teams. We just didn’t have enough offense.” Post said that although all of the teams at the tournament played at a higher level, Yuba remained competitive in all games.
Even though the team lost in the tourney, the team is undefeated for the season with a record of 4-0. The 49ers were victorious over Chabet College in their Wednesday September 17 match-up at home. They showed that they were ready for a competitive season, winning the game in three straight sets. The 49ers jumped into an early lead in the first set of the game. The second set yielded both teams giving all they had, battling back and forth in an evenly matched set. In the third set Chabet was showed that they still had life left, taking advantage of some of the costly mistakes made by Yuba. Drawing near to a Chabet comeback, the 49ers demonstrated great teamwork and a defensive hustle to lock-in the win.
The volleyball team had a definite home court advantage with intense support by some members of the Yuba College Football team. The football team’s chanting energized the women’s volleyball team and aided them in prevailing over Chabet.
The win over Chabet was a continuation of the season starting momentum gained during the 38th Annual Yuba College Volleyball Invitational. The tournament was held Saturday September 6 at home, resulting in a Yuba win for the first time in 18 years. Yuba prevailed with wins over College of the Redwoods, Chabet and Poterville. Yuba College returning player, Alisa Korn was also named tournament MVP. Post said, “Alisa Korn is doing a great job as our setter. She was our MVP at the tourney.”
The team is currently benefiting from seven other players returning for a second year, including team captains, Katie Devaney and Johanna Farren. The team also has some exciting first-year prospects: Cassidy Haskell and Lindsey Quail. The 49ers are also benefiting from sophomore Krystal Gualco’s decision to play volleyball instead of soccer this season.
The Yuba College Volleyball team still has a tough road ahead of them with some of the heavy hitters still to come. Post said that the teams that she was most concerned about this season were Delta, Sac City, American River and Santa Rosa. She said, “They are strong year in and year out.”
The team is yet to face any of those teams but will travel to Sacramento City College on Friday, October 10, followed by a match-up against Santa Rosa on Wednesday, October
