Prospects of free food and writing assistance led many of Yuba College’s students to the Writing and Language Development Center’s open house last Wednesday, January 28. Students from all across the writing spectrum gathered together to participate in this interactive event that featured drop-in tutoring, computer usage and the enticing food of the student-led Flavors Restaurant.
The open house showcased many of the Center’s free student services, which range from tutoring to technology to a variety of weekly workshops. Already there have been students who have taken advantage of the various services that the WLDC has to offer. “This center has been very helpful. You come in, you talk, relax, have fun, and then you can work on your assignments,” said student Jennifer Thomas.
Among the services provided, the Center hosts weekly writing workshops which focus on various aspects of writing that include mechanics, organizing, researching and techniques to prepare students for the final writing exams. Workshops can be an invaluable asset to students who are seeking to strengthen different parts of their writing and who are interested in learning about the various technologies offered through the Center.
Students from any level of writing are encouraged to come in and benefit from the useful services the Center has to offer. “I’m excited about the broad-range, it makes things more interesting,” said staff member Rosemary McKeever. “It’s good for everyone at every level to be here. It makes an academically diverse environment.”
