Despite this season’s rainy weather, Yuba College’s tennis teams are already anticipating next year’s sunny skies and promise for success.
This season the men’s team edged ahead of the women’s tennis team finishing 1-8, while the women toughed it out 0-8, placing them at the bottom of the conference.
Although all six members of the women’s team are first year players, the team shows a lot of talent. “Vicki Kiehn is currently ranked number 10 in the conference and Michaela [Resendez] number 15.” Yuba Community College coach Josh Prager said. He added, “They are ranked number nine as a doubles team in the conference.”
Prager, who is hopeful about next season, said that the women’s team is looking forward to the conference and post-season tournaments.
The men celebrated a victory over Consumnes River College’s team in the opener this year. But later they were overmatched in conference play.
All seven players on the men’s team, except sophomores Gary Vongsavath and Lue Thao, are freshmen.
But, many tennis team coaches explain that having a young team is beneficial in the end because the players have more time to develop and practice as a team.
As for the future, “The Big 7 conference is very strong this year,” Prager said. “All the teams are pretty good.”
Looking to make the top eight in the Big 7 this season, Prager made sure to notify any prospective players that if they wish to join the 2007 tennis squad, they should contact him via e-mail at: joshprager@yahoo.com
