The 2009 season for the 49ers’ Baseball team was as successful as it was disappointing; the team compiled an overall record of 23-18, 14-13 in conference play. Good for fourth place in the Bay Valley Conference, but just short of the playoffs. Despite the conference record, three players (outfielders Scott and Erik Underwood, and pitcher/shortstop Adrian Perez), made 1st Team ALL Bay Valley Conference, while catcher Steven Davis made 2nd Team ALL BVC.
Now all eyes are on 2010, and ‘Niners Coach Tim Gloyd could not be more excited. “We’re really looking forward to this season,” Gloyd said.
The ‘Niners have brought back seven sophomores from the original eight that started last season, and has added new talent, including Yuba City High graduate Tyler Updike.
The ‘Niners haven’t started off this season particularly well, the team pulling together a 4-7 record, although it can be said that a good number of losses have been against some of the top teams in the state. “Getting our guys ready for conference play is our biggest priority.”
Gloyd said that their biggest challenges lie in not committing so many errors, and focusing on their fundamentals.
The ‘Niners are focused on coming away from conference play ready for the playoffs, but with teams like Mendocino, Laney and Solano, no doubt a tough schedule, things are not going to be easy for the 49ers.
