The Yuba College 49ers appeared blasé compared to the enthusiasm they have shown in previous games, and this caused concern among the fans who gathered to watch them play at Gary Engelken Field on Wednesday.
JD Downer’s solid home-run drove the ball over the left-field marker (375′) to score Yuba’s first score of the game, and the lead (0-1). However, the cheering was short-lived as the next two batters struck-out in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Ivan Lamas, the 49ers freshman pitcher, gave up four hits in the 4th inning allowing the Roadrunners to score four runs (4-1). Alec Abend hit a RBI double to score Brandon Evans and David Henderson, and RJ Mott hit a RBI single to bring in two more runs.
Yuba’s Anthony Stolo managed to get to second base on a bad throw to first, and a RBI single by Chris Stocker brought him home. At the end of the 6th inning, the score was 4-2.
The Roadrunners would once again score in the 8th inning, and tag on three more runs in the 9th. Down by six runs, Yuba’s Joe Garcia hit a grounder to the third baseman, Trenton Lewis, who threw him out at first. All eyes turned towards the substitute, AZ Sutton, as he stepped into the batters box. A hard hit ball into left-field allowed the stand-up single, and Yuba’s opportunity to add points to the scoreboard
With two outs, Brandon Pope managed to get on base, and the next hit by Nick Finney scored Lewis. (8-3) However, the Yuba College 49ers did not play consistent, and the sporadic efforts by individual players did not afford them a win.
