Twenty-eight post-secondary institutions assembled in the Yuba Community College Marysville Campus quad area for the Annual College Information Day event held on October 3.
Yuba College has been host to College Information Day for more than 21 years, providing a period for transfer and admissions applications to various universities, while showcasing Yuba College’s own departments and programs.
“The month of October is a big transfer time,” Kelly Boren, Yuba College Counselor, said. “Everyone is starting to apply at the CSU and UC schools.”
This year, representatives from eight California State University campuses, three University of California campuses, as well as various private and vocational institutions, arrived equipped with informational resources for the crowd of YCCD students and high-schoolers from “feeder” schools in the district.
Yuba College’s own vocational program lineup established itself among the network of royal blue presentation tables emblazoned with academic insignia. Vocational programs are geared specifically toward students pursuing job qualifying skills, certificates and associate degrees. YCCD harbors some 13 vocational programs, including Drafting, Informational Technology, Mass Communications, Veterinary Technology, Auto Technology, Nursing, Psychiatric Technology, Food Service Management, Industrial Machinery, Administration of Justice, Fire Technology and Early Childhood Education.
Some programs showcased tangible products of their trade. Sutter Beauty College’s Becky Hamilton mounted an assortment of stylists’ practice mannequins and color swatches at her presentation table, while Auto Body Instructor Don Schumacher’s glossy display of classic and muscle cars courtesy of Grass Valley’s Roman Angels Car Club drew a bevy of curious students, males and females alike.
Sutter County’s Workforce Investment Act-a program sponsored by the Sutter County One Stop to provide resources such as job training, books, supplies, childcare, tools, fees, testing and transportation assistance-handed out cotton candy and other novelties in a light effort to garner attention to its contributions to the community.
Of inherent pertinence to high school attendees was YCCD’s Tech Prep Program, designed to facilitate the transition from high school to post-secondary education for dubious students with its “2+2” articulation agreement. Tech Prep targets high school juniors and seniors, enabling them to earn college credits while still in high school.
“Tech Prep has expanded and grown since the 1980’s,” Program Assistant Christy Spade said.
Other representatives at CID included CSU Sacramento and UC Davis, Army Recruiters, Air Force and ROTC proponents, San Diego’s Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, ITT Technical Institute, Samuel Merritt College and The International University of Nursing, among several others.
A multitude of additional resources to assist in the transfer process can be acquired year-round at Yuba College’s Transfer Center.
