The women’s volleyball team is already showing a promise for excellence this season, starting with their 4-1 win at the Yuba Invitational Tournament held Saturday September 14; they won their first match at Chabot College making them 1-0 on the road. The ladies will be tested during September playing all away games. The new freshmen will be put to the test to see how competitive volleyball can be.
Coach Thea Post said, “There are many differences between this level of competition and high school volleyball.”
But Post feels confident that her ladies are up to it. Coach Post goes on to say, “I’m really excited! I have a good team and I see signs of brilliance. Although her team this year is young with 8 new freshman players, she is confident that her 4 sophomore players will be the strength and leaders on the team. Coach Post is really proud of all her players and mentioned Captains Erika Rennie and Sonja Mitchell, Deena Young and Erin Porter as being leaders. Post sees good things for Porter in particular. “She’s really on her game right now.” The team has been putting many of their hours on and off the court for training. Post says, “These ladies work really hard mentally and physically. They work hard every minute during their training.”
Player Katie Devaney, a freshman, said, “The training, especially the weight training, has helped me with my game as well as staying physically fit.” Because these ladies are together for most of the day they have grown together like a family Devaney continued, “Our team has bonded well. I feel confident talking to other players on the team making me more confident on the court. We can grow as players because of this communication.” The ladies may have some tough competition this year. Post said, “American River is a stronger team this year, and I see them giving more of a fight, as well as Delta who are always a strong team.” She continued, “No matter who we play it will be tough. Our conference is one of the strongest in California. There are many competitive players.” Post sees great things for her team this year, “Our defense is strong, and our offense needs to be more precise, but I am confident they can do it,” said Post. “There is good movement from the front players. They are a younger team and it might take a little longer but I feel strong about this team.” The ladies will be coming home to play on their home court on October 2 against Santa Rosa College at 6:30 p.m. Expect this to be an exciting year for Women’s Volleyball.
