In a unanimous vote by the Yuba Community College District Curriculum Committee adopted English 1A, College Composition and Reading as the new graduation requirement for students aiming to obtain an Associates degree. On Tuesday, December 7, the committee approved raising the standards from the current requirement of English 51, entitled Preparatory Composition and Reading.
Students attending Yuba College in Fall 2005 for the first time will be affected by the change. Current Yuba College Students will not be affected by the new standards. Students have catalog rights based on the year during which they first enrolled at Yuba College. Those rights ensure that future changes to graduation requirements do not upset their scholastic plans.
Students seeking credentials are unaffected by the change as well. Each department dictates the requirements for its credentials.
Statistics provided by Yuba College’s Education Master Plan indicate that in Spring 2004, 90 percent of the student graduates had taken and passed English 1A. Since 1999 on average 84 percent of the students who graduate with an associates degree from Yuba College have taken and passed English 1A.
