Jeremy Johnson ran for three touchdowns, and John Garcia completed 11 of 15 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown as the Yuba College 49ers (4-2 overall, 1-0 conference) ran over Shasta College (1-5, 0-1) in their first Bay Valley Conference league game of the season, 30-13. The Niners held Shasta to 167 total yards, and -4 yards rushing while compiling 266 yards on the ground.
“The o-line did their thing, they did great, we just gotta learn how to finish after we drive,” said Johnson, who’s three touchdowns lead the team to victory. “No stupid penalties, nothing, stay focused and be smart about the situation.”
“We got to do what we like to do, which is run the ball,” said Niners running back Juan Johnson, who ran for 97 of the 266 in the game.
The 49ers defense kept Shasta from getting into a rhythm, and intercepted two passes off of Shasta quarterback Brad Lohse, while sacking him 4 times over the course of the game, defensive lineman Kameron Nightingale picking up two of them, while Nathaniel Morris and Tyrone Grove got one each.
The win turns Yuba around after two tough losses to College of the Siskyous and #7 ranked American River College, who dropped Yuba 54-12 in Sacramento. Yuba now travels away to Fairfield and Solano College, who lost their last game at Sacramento 36-19. Yuba will look to continue their stifling defense and punishing run attack to stay unbeaten, while Solano will be participating in their first league game of their season, and will be looking to turn their season around with a win over the Niners.
Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, in Solano.
